Status of the PWS
- We are currently in the process of transitioning all computer usage over to two new servers.
While we hope to make this move as painless as possible, we realize there may be some rough spots.
We will keep you informed, via this web-page, of our progress in the move.
- The old Physics Instructional Computing Facility is being
renamed to the Physics WorkStations, and is moving to its own domain:
.pws.uiuc.edu.
For consistency, the new machine will continue to be named Alecto, though it will now be
alecto.pws rather than alecto.physics.
This machine will also handle web services. Therefore, your web pages at
http://www.pws.uiuc.edu/~username/ will continue to work.
- All passwords must be changed to ensure that the new system is as secure as possible.
Each user will be issued a random password.
You should log in using this random password and can change it to a password of your choice.
Do not use your old password.
Be sure to pick a good password.
Accounts with passwords that are easily guessed will be locked.

Some basic guidelines are:
Only do things you would want everyone else to do, too.
Respect the privacy of other users.
If you find a problem, fix it yourself or report it right away.
Abide by all applicable laws concerning use of the system.
Be responsible for what you do and always identify yourself.
