TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS IN THE IMAGING TECHNOLOGY GROUP

Bugscope Bugscope controls

Bugscope is an educational outreach project of the Beckman Institute. Participating classrooms from around the nation have the opportunity to image insects using an Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope controlled using a web browser from their classroom computers. The primary goal of the project is to demonstrate that relatively low cost, sustainable access to sophisticated remote instrumentation can be made available to K-12 classrooms.

Chickscope

Chickscope is an inquiry-based learning and teaching program for K-12 classrooms. Chickscope is a web-based program that allows students to study chicken embryo development using a variety of educational resources, such as inquiry-based curriculum materials, interactive modules on egg mathematics and a remotely controlled MRI system.

These two above projects, plus new, in-the-works initiatives make up ITG's Remote Microscopy project.

3D reconstruction
3D Reconstruction

3D Reconstruction refers to ITG's current efforts in their ongoing, multi-discipilinary Mandible Reconstruction Project. The first pass of this project involved a proof-of-concept workflow for the understanding, design, and fabrication of a workable, perfectly-fitting artifical bone implant. Future ITG efforts will include investigation into improvement of this workflow, including the development of new and automated tools for model creation as a part of this workflow.

Visualization

Visualization Technology encompasses software and techniques developed by the ITG that enables the presentation and/or visualization of scientific data.

Cell Structures

The Web Atlas of Cellular Structures displays a series of light and confocal micrographs illustrating a variety of subcellular structures and organelles. We hope to provide a useful educational resource for people interested in cytology who do not have access to advanced imaging technologies or cell biological expertise.
