Nucleus and ActinThese images show the distributions of nuclei and actin filaments in cultured epithelial cells. Please refer to Nucleus and Microtubules for a complete description of the nucleus. Actin is the most abundant of all cytoskeletal proteins. Actin filaments are composed of globular actin monomers that have been assembled to form a tight helix. These filaments are assembled and disassembled according to the required function. The actin cytoskeleton is involved in cell motility, membrane ruffling, membrane invagination, and cytokinesis. A description of actin can also can be found under Actin and Microtubules. All cells were processed using gluteraldehyde fixation and stained with rhodamine-conjugated phalloidin to visualize actin and sytox green, a DNA specific dye, to view the nucleus. |
