WHAT ART IS AND WHY WE MAY NEED IT
Rose Marshack Narrative Media Graduate Student and Visiting Research Programmer, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, UIUC 3/1/2005 3rd Floor Tower, 3269 Beckman Rose Marshack, computer scientist, professional musician, martial arts instructor and aspiring digital artist talks about what it's been like to move from Computer Science to Art + Design and back again. Rose graduated with an undergrad degree in Computer Science at UIUC in 1987, programmed walk-in flight simulators in 8086 assembler for 3 years, then spent 10 years touring the US and Europe as the bass player in an independent rock band. She now works both north and south of Green, combining arts and technologies, programming a Cube application for the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, and is completing a Narrative Media degree in the School of Art + Design. Her artwork utilizes computing and machinery to mediate nature. She will talk about the technical aspects of creating digital media, the artistic aspects of coding, how she has finally figured out what Art is, and Why We May Need it.
