DVD, a technology that continues to expand its user base, offers people a versatile communications medium. It can deliver high-quality audio and video, or serve as a high-capacity data backup solution. In addition to its more traditional roles, it allows for custom construction of interactive titles.

The VMIL will be purchasing a DVD authoring, mastering and replication system. This system will include authoring software, MPEG-2 real-time encoding hardware, a DVD-R burner, and other supporting equipment. In preparation for its arrival, an introduction to current DVD technology will be presented, along with a discussion of possible scientific applications of DVD.
