Neurolucida and Stereoinvestigator: Two systems for Analysis of Morphology of Biological Structures

Anna Klintsova

Research Assistant Professor in Beckman Institute (NPA group) and Manager of EM Suite

18 February 1999

It is a rare case nowadays that qualitative or descriptional data are so obvious that they can "prove" experimental biological findings.   Instead more and more often quantitative analysis of changes in cells/tissue is required.  The Microscopy Suite in the basement of Beckman Institute recently acquired two software packages for quantitative neuroanatomical analysis: Neurolucida and Stereoinvestigator.  This presentation will provide the overview of major features of Neurolucida (trace and branching analysis of processes; brain mapping, 3D serial reconstruction) and Stereoinvestigator (unbiased estimates of the number and morphological properties of biological structures; most of the modern stereological probes).  The presentation will illustrate how these programs are being used in the ongoing research of Beckman Institute and campus scientists.  Although both programs were developed with nervous system cells' measurements in mind, they can be applied for other systems.
