Materials Characterization

Martin U. Pralle

Graduate Student/Research Assistant
Dept of Materials Science and Engineering

1 October 1998

Materials characterization requires the gamut of experimental techniques available in the Microscopy Suite and Visualization, Media and Imaging Laboratory. This lecture will present step by step methodologies for structure determination and materials characterization. The talk will concentrate on the use of the transmission electron microscope for imaging as well as electron diffraction. Simulations using Cerius2 will also be discussed as they apply to crystal structure determination and electron diffraction. Experimental examples will come from work carried out here at the Beckman Institute on the structural investigation of rodcoil polymers.
