Finally after the sample is placed in the EM column and the investigator starts to explore it, he or she needs to be aware that he/she is looking at the very thin section - practically two-dimensional - of the three-dimensional structure. Thus the volumes appear as areas, areas appear as lines and lines appear as dots on the sections. One needs to be aware of this, otherwise an absolutely wrong conclusion can be made.
