Notes:
After sections are placed on the grid and stained - very often they are covered with a layer of carbon to become more stable and long-lasting under the damaging electron beam. In practice, it can be done in vacuum evaporator - another device that we have in our possession downstairs . Practically in very high vacuum environment under the bell the carbon string is being heated and carbon starts to evaporate and covers everything - including the grids - with carbon layer. The thickness of the layer depends on the vacuum level, time of evaporation. The size of the carbon grains is extremely fine.
Metals are also used - to make metal shadowing and replicas of small structures and molecules.
