Notes:
Negative contrast - macromolecules themselves are unstained but surrounded by the stained background. Negative stains are not used in sectioned materials but instead are mostly used to contrast whole intact biological structures (viruses, bacteria, subcellular organelles) that are deposited on supporting film.
