Accessing your ITG home directory through the network

Your ITG home directory resides on a machine called zeus.itg.uiuc.edu, or 130.126.126.162. Your home directory automatically mounts when you logon to an ITG machine. If you would like to access your ITG home directory from anywhere on campus you can use the following methods:

WINDOWS

You can use windows browsing to connect to your home directory. However, for security reasons, this will only work if you are within the University of Illinois domain. Please follow these steps to connect to your ITG home directory:

• Double click on "My Network Places" or "Network Neighborhood" or "Computer" if you are running Vista.
• In the "Address" text field, enter in the following: "\\zeus.itg.uiuc.edu" or "\\130.126.126.162"
• A window should appear asking you for a username and password. Fill in the username field in the following way: "BECKMAN-ITG\username", where username is your ITG username. Then fill in your ITG password in the password field. Then hit enter and it should authenticate you.
• Once authenticated, your home directory should appear in the window.
• This connection is one time only, when you logout or reboot, the connection will be gone.

Windows Map Network Drive (permanent link) - you can also map a network drive from windows. When you map a network drive, that drive will show up as a network resource in 'My Computer' each time you login to your machine. As with windows browsing, mapping an ITG network drive will only work from within the UI domain:

• Right click on "My Computer"
• Select "Map Network Drive..."
• For the "Folder" text field, type in "\\zeus.itg.uiuc.edu\username", where username is your ITG username. Make sure the "Reconnect at logon" check box is checked. Select Finsh.
• A window may appear asking for your username and password, enter your ITG username and password. Be sure to enter your username as follows: "BECKMAN-ITG\username".
• Once done, your ITG home directory should appear in 'My Computer' each time you logon to your machine.

!!! WINDOWS VISTA USERS !!!

Windows Vista networking blocks access to Samba servers by default, so to access our ITG Samba servers, you must change a local security policy setting on your Windows Vista machine.

Control Panel, classic view -> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy -> Local Policies -> Security Options.... Change 'Network security: LAN Manager authentication level' to 'Send LM & NTLM responses'

Vista Home versions do not have local security policy access, so you'll need to change the registry:

(1) Go to the registry, run 'regedt32'

(2) Find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa

(3) Set LmCompatibilityLevel to 1

MACINTOSH OS X

If you are within the U of I domain (campus network), then you can use Samba in the following way:

• Click on Go in the Finder menu.
• In the connect to text field, type in: smb://zeus.itg.uiuc.edu
• At this point zeus will ask you what share you want to mount, select 'users'
• When asked for a username and password, enter in the Domain: BECKMAN-ITG, your username, and your ITG password.
• At this point the users share should mount on your desktop, now just browse that share, find your home, and there are your files!

ACCESSING ZEUS FROM OUTSIDE THE CAMPUS NETWORK

University network admins block all Samba (SMB) traffic outside the U of I campus, so you must use alternative methods, which are just as good

WinSCP Client - a GUI FTP style SSH program. If you are coming from outside the UI domain, you can download this software from the following page: http://winscp.sourceforge.net/eng/download.php. Make sure you install the "WinSCP 4.x.x" package, do not install the beta package. Once installed, you can use this software to get a GUI FTP style connection to zeus.itg.uiuc.edu. This shoudl work from anywhere in the world. Similar SSH FTP programs exist for Mac, such as Transmit.

PuTTY Client - a command line interface. If you are coming from outside the UI domain, you can download this software from the following page: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/. Once installed, you can use this software to command line SSH zeus.itg.uiuc.edu.
