Aragonite Needles

ESEM image of aragonite (CaCO3) "needles" growing from a calcite (CaCO3) crystal base on a stainless steel washer substrate. The crystals shown in this image precipitated from Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park over a 48-hour period.
