Monarch Wing Scale

ESEM image of a portion of a Monarch butterfly wing scale from a Bugscope session with Harrington Middle School, Mt. Laurel, NJ. The larger divisions (roughly horizontal) are about 1.6 micrometers apart. The smaller parallel components (angled) are about 70 nanometers apart.
