The Blending of Art and Science: "reverse voxel"

Blending scientific data collection and analysis with sculpture conception and production, art graduate student Leslie Speicher works on her piece, titled "reverse voxel." Speicher has been working with the Imaging Technology Group at the Beckman Institute to study varying aspects of her own body. Using both imagery of her own blood (gathered using the multiple modalities of light, electron and scanning probe microscopy), as well as three-dimensional reconstructions of blood cells and her torso (from MRI data), Speicher has created a series of works that explore the ways in which bodies are viewed by their inhabitants and those around them.
